The Disruption: A Scottish Tale Of Recent Times is a novel written by William Cross and published in 1846. The story is set in Scotland during the early 19th century and revolves around the events leading up to the Disruption of 1843, which saw a group of Scottish ministers break away from the Church of Scotland to form the Free Church of Scotland. The novel follows the lives of several characters, including the Reverend John Wycliffe, a minister who becomes disillusioned with the Church of Scotland's hierarchy and joins the Free Church movement. Other characters include Wycliffe's wife, Mary, and their children, as well as several members of the Church of Scotland who are opposed to the Disruption.Throughout the novel, Cross explores themes of faith, loyalty, and the struggle for religious freedom. He also provides a detailed account of the events leading up to the Disruption and the impact it had on Scottish society.Overall, The Disruption: A Scottish Tale Of Recent Times is a historical novel that offers a fascinating insight into a pivotal moment in Scottish history.
