Madame Therese is a novel written by the French duo Erckmann-Chatrian and first published in 1891. The story is set in the early 19th century in a small village in the Vosges Mountains in France. Madame Therese is the wife of a wealthy landowner, who is known for his cruel treatment of his tenants. Despite her husband's behavior, Madame Therese is respected and admired by the villagers for her kindness and generosity. The novel follows Madame Therese's journey as she tries to help the villagers, particularly the poor and oppressed, while also dealing with her husband's increasingly erratic behavior. Along the way, she forms a close bond with a young orphan boy named Jean, whom she takes under her wing and treats as her own son.As tensions rise between Madame Therese and her husband, the villagers begin to take sides, leading to a dramatic and unexpected climax. Through it all, Madame Therese remains a steadfast and compassionate figure, standing up for what she believes in and fighting for justice.Madame Therese is a powerful and moving novel that explores themes of social inequality, compassion, and the struggle for justice. Erckmann-Chatrian's vivid descriptions of the Vosges Mountains and the rural life of 19th century France transport the reader to another time and place, while the story's timeless themes continue to resonate with readers today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
