Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics is a collection of poems written by the ancient Greek poet Sappho, translated into English by Canadian poet Bliss Carman. The book was first published in 1904 and contains 100 of Sappho's most famous and influential works.Sappho was a poet who lived on the island of Lesbos in the 6th century BCE, and she is widely regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets of all time. Her poems were highly personal and often dealt with themes of love, desire, and the beauty of the natural world. In this collection, Carman has attempted to capture the essence of Sappho's poetry in English, while also staying true to the original Greek. The poems are arranged thematically, with sections focusing on love, nature, and the gods, among other topics.Carman's translations are known for their musicality and their ability to capture the emotional power of Sappho's words. The book also includes an introduction by Carman, in which he discusses Sappho's life and work, as well as the challenges of translating her poetry.Overall, Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics is a beautiful and accessible introduction to the work of one of the greatest poets of all time, and a testament to the enduring power of Sappho's words. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
