Originally published in 1939, this book presents a selection of some of the most captivating Greek poetry from antiquity and illumines new nuances of meaning through the author's largely exclusive translations. Ranging between the dates 650 BC and AD 920, the book contains a myriad of poems all concerned with the subjects of love and wine. There is broad range of authorship contained, encompassing the acclaimed Plato to anonymous and complete poems included as well as intelligible and intriguing fragments. This book is a must read for literature scholars and will be of considerable interest to scholars in cognate fields such as classics, philosophy and literary translation. An earlier publication Some Greek Poems of Love and Beauty in 1937 accompanies this book, in which Edmonds provides a comprehensive introduction to the poems and outlines their origin and ideology.
