Finy your why: a practical guide to finding purpose in your daily actions (Review by Rafael Estermann)

Being a student in search of his academic or professional purpose and now having a university course about personal branding that is interconnected with the question of “finding your why”, coming across this brilliant book by Simon Sinek was a blessing. This book truly helped me in constructing and attaching meaning to my actions, as a student but also as a young human being apart from university. Now it’s easier for me to see the value of adding the question to my action “Why am I doing this”? And this makes me feel a lot better. “Find Your Why” starts with introducing the concept of "WHY" and its importance in understanding motivation and how it helps to build strong connections with clients and customers. It shows that people are easily motivated by deeper purposes rather than money. The book brilliantly depicts that making people feel like they are part of something bigger actually helps to bond a long business relationship. Simon Sinek demonstrates the importance of emotions in human decision-making and explains that aligning emotionally with customers and clients ultimately leads to stronger and more meaningful connections. The idea of always having a purpose for what I’m doing seemed logical to me from the beginning on, but its practicality is what I doubted with. Sinek and his co-authors talk about his popular theory “The Golden Circle” and the correlation between the three layers: What, How, and Why. He shows that WHAT corresponds to the neocortex (part of our brain) which is responsible for rational thought and understanding facts and figures. And the other two parts of the “Golden Circle” (the how and why) correspond with another part of the brain (the Limbic System) which is responsible for decision-making, behaviour, and emotions of trust and loyalty! While reading, I often found myself asking myself in my day-to-day life: “Rafael, why are you doing this the way your doing it?” and to my surprise I often found answers quickly. Nothing is more satisfying than knowing the meaning of “Why,” and it is only possible through non-biased self discovery. “Finding Your Why” exactly comes there to help continuous self exploring. The authors discuss a process for discovering and articulating one's "WHY," which is defined as the purpose, cause, or belief that drives a person. This was very helpful for me because the process involves reflecting on one's life and career experiences to identify recurring themes and stories that reveal their WHY. The best part of the book for me was guidance on how to initiate a “Tribe Why Discovery” session, a process aimed at helping a group or organization uncover its collective "WHY" or purpose, cause, or belief. The book shows several steps to organise the session effectively like Bringing in a senior leader, Sharing a personal WHY story, Group interaction, Addressing challenges and questions, and Outline the session. I think this is gold for organizational and corporate leaders, which I aspire to be one day as well. I read a lot of books that try to provide active practical lessons for its readers. This book and the way the authors took the art of providing practical lessons to its readers still is on a different level. They showed their expertise on how to find an individual’s “Why.” They suggest a specific format for note-taking to make it easier to identify essential elements. Finally, “Find Your Why” is like a friend holding your hand and walks you through what the book promises. As I was interested in the author itself, I watched several of Simon Sinek’s videos online additionally. While I usually prefer videographic content over books, the book does still a better job in providing a strategy and advices in one single place. The theories and every procedure explained in the book are so easily understood because of the way it is written and structured. Anyone seeking clarity and direction in their personal or professional lives should read this book, in my opinion.

    Auf den Grund

Endlich fängt mal jemand 'von vorne' an. Da, wo andere meist nicht wirklich sicher sind. Das Trio Why | How | What wird hier erweitert. Empfehlenswert Rike, Coachissima

Searching for Meaning: My Review of "Find your Why" (from S. Sp.)

"Find Your Why" by Simon Sinek, written together with David Mead and Peter Docker, is a practical book that tries to help people understand their personal purpose. The authors believe that everyone has a “Why”, a reason that motivates them and gives their work meaning. The book explains how to discover this through simple exercises and honest reflection. What I liked most about the book is that it is easy to read. The authors use friendly language and don’t try to sound too complicated. They guide the reader slowly through the steps needed to find their purpose. First, you gather important stories from your life, especially moments that made you feel proud, happy, or emotionally moved. Then you discuss these stories with another person who helps you find common themes. According to the authors, these themes point to your “Why.” This method feels personal and sometimes emotional, but in a good way. It encourages you to think about what really matters to you, not just what you think you should want. The book also shows how groups and organizations can do a similar exercise to find a shared purpose. These parts are quite practical and could be useful for teams that want to work together more effectively. Still, the book is not perfect. One thing that bothered me is that the authors say your “Why” never changes. They claim it stays the same for your whole life. For me, this idea feels too strict. Most people change over time; their goals, values, and priorities can develop. I think it would make more sense to accept that a person’s purpose might also shift a little as they grow and experience new things. Another weakness is that the method depends strongly on having a “Why Discovery partner.” This partner should listen carefully, ask good questions, and help you see patterns in your stories. The problem is that not everyone has someone who can do this. The book gives a few ideas for what to do if you’re alone, but honestly, the process still works best with another person. This makes it harder for readers who prefer doing things independently. The book also suggests that discovering your purpose will lead to more success and satisfaction in life. While this is a positive message, it sometimes feels too idealistic. Purpose can help guide you, but it cannot fix every problem. Stress, financial challenges, or difficult work environments don’t disappear just because you know your “Why.” I think the book could have been a bit more realistic about this. Despite these criticisms, I still found "Find Your Why" interesting and helpful. It pushes readers to think about themselves in a deeper way and offers a clear method for doing so. The exercises are simple enough that almost anyone can try them. Even if the idea of a fixed “Why” feels a bit too strong, the process of reflecting on personal stories is valuable on its own. Overall, it is a practical and motivating book, especially for people who want more direction or meaning in their lives. It has its limits, but it also gives readers a good starting point for understanding themselves better.
