"This epic atmospheric novel examines humans' will to endure the unthinkable." -Real Simple magazine

"There are many great things about this book...It will thrill her fans with its combination of Greek tragedy, Romeo and Juliet-like coming of age story and domestic potboiler. She recreates in magical detail the lives of Alaska's homesteaders...and is just as specific and authentic in her depiction of the spiritual wounds of post-Vietnam America. A tour de force." -Kirkus (starred review)

"Hannah vividly evokes the natural beauty and danger of Alaska and paints a compelling portrait of a family in crisis and a community on the brink of change." -Booklist

"Reliably alluring...The Great Alone is packed with rapturous descriptions of Alaskan scenery... Hannah remembers and summons an undeveloped wilderness, describing a gloriously pristine region in the days before cruise ships discovered it." -New York Times

"In this latest from Hannah, the landscape is hard and bleak but our young heroine learns to accept it and discover her true self...fans will appreciate the astuteness of the story and the unbreakable connection between mother and child." -Library Journal

"Hannah skillfully situates the emotional family saga in the events and culture of the late '70s... But it's her tautly drawn characters-Large Marge, Genny, Mad Earl, Tica, Tom-who contribute not only to Leni's improbable survival but to her salvation amid her family's tragedy." -Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Hannah turns the written word into wonderful prose...Times are difficult for so many in this novel and Hannah captures their suffering with sensitivity. The author expertly shows how love, death and birth run the full circle of life." -RT Book Reviews

One of the best books I have ever read!

This book taught me so much about surviving both wild nature and abuse, and Kristen Hannah writes so beautifully and so brutally honest. The love story of Leni and Matthew is so beautiful, definitely not an ordinary one but not less heartwarming to read. I'll recommend this book to anyone who loves stories you'll keep in your heart for the rest of your life!

About love and loss in beautiful yet brutal Alaska

When you are keen on novels about love and loss, this might well be your next pick. The Great Alone is a novel that is hard to put down, so well written is it, so full of beauty and (looming) disasters. You will get to know Alaska at its best and worst. You will follow the path full of obstacles the family of Ernt, Cora and Leni is taking. You get insight in resilience and friendships and you will get many lessons about love and letting go. Because there is so much you can think (and talk) about, this will be a great book club pick too.

    Glorious

What a truly glorious book. The story lets you immerse yourself in the wilds of Alaska and lets you dream of the wild harsh life there. There are only a few books which brought me to tears and this is one of it. I was captivated and mesmerised and couldn't stopf reading, yet sometimes had to stop, cause the emotions got intense. One of the greatest stories I've read, so a big recommendation.

    Survival gets a new meaning

The Great Alone is my first novel by Kristin Hannah and I am sure it won’t be the last. This is a novel you can’t put down, I fell in love with the author’s style right from the start. Very emotional and heartfelt, at some point I asked myself whether there is a limit to how much pain a family can endure. Apparently not. That the story is set in Alaska, the most remote and dangerous place adds even more to the load of suspense. According to the author’s writing it really must be beautiful up there so far from civilization, alone in nature fending for yourself. It may not be for everyone, especially in winter.

    Unglaublich Fesselnd

What a wonderful story about love

Leni loves her Family. And she loves the wild and untamed Beauty of Alaska, the new home her impulsive father has placed the Family. But over time the love for his wife and daughter received a dangerous taste and Leni has to fear for herself and her mother. Gripping. Heartbreaking. Fabulous.
