Alfred J. Church's The Odyssey for Boys and Girls retells Homer's great epic in a lively and accessible form designed especially for younger readers. Drawing upon the ancient Greek poem traditionally attributed to Homer, Church presents the adventures of the hero Odysseus in clear and engaging prose. The story follows Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War, facing monsters, enchantresses, storms, and the wrath of the gods during his long journey across the seas. Young readers encounter some of the most famous episodes of classical mythology: the encounter with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the dangerous song of the Sirens, the enchantments of Circe, and the trials that await Odysseus upon his long-delayed return to Ithaca. Through courage, cunning, and perseverance, the hero ultimately overcomes these challenges and restores order to his household. Church's retelling preserves the spirit of the original epic while presenting the story in language that is approachable for younger audiences. For generations his adaptations of Greek myths and legends have served as a gateway to the great literature of the ancient world.
