Civil War tokens are tangible artifacts of America's most turbulent era. These cent-sized tokens, privately issued by merchants and tradesmen during the Civil War, filled the gap left by the disappearance of official U.S. coinage from circulation in 1862. They carried patriotic slogans, political messages, and business advertising while serving as practical substitutes for cents in everyday commerce.
In this updated and expanded third edition of A Guide Book of Civil War Tokens, award-winning author Q. David Bowers chronicles the fascinating story behind these tokens, weaving together historical background, detailed cataloging, and essential collecting insight. Readers will discover how to identify, grade, and value both patriotic tokens and merchant store cards, with comprehensive listings, rarity ratings, and thousands of vivid illustrations. This indispensable reference is an engaging guide for novice and experienced collectors alike, as well as history buffs and anyone drawn to the material culture of the American Civil War.
"A Must-have book for Civil War token collectors. You will benefit from Dave Bower's decades of research, presented in a very readable format." -John Ostendorf, Civil War Token Society.
Immerse yourself in the compelling world of Civil War tokens with the all-new third edition of A Guide Book of Civil War Tokens, part of Whitman's renowned Red Book Series. This acclaimed series spans nearly 30 volumes, each offering in-depth coverage of U.S. coin types and programs featured in the Official Red Book.
