Behind every grand Scottish house lay a ledger, and few are as revealing as The Household Book of Lady Grisell Baillie, 1692-1733. These pages hum with life. Kept by a remarkable aristocratic woman over four decades, this Scottish household account book records in meticulous detail the rhythm of spending and saving in late 17th century Scotland and early 18th century Scotland: food and fuel, clothing and servants, remedies, travel and charity. Line by line, it opens a rare window onto Scottish domestic life in the 1700s, turning historical household records into an intimate portrait of Scottish nobility household life, from the kitchen to the withdrawing room. Long valued as a primary source social history text, Lady Grisell Baillie's accounts illuminate women's economic history in Scotland, revealing how money, work and care were managed within a great house and its surrounding estate. Names of servants, tradespeople and neighbours flicker through the ledger, making the volume a rich resource for genealogy research as well as an essential reference for social historians and anyone interested in everyday life in Scotland. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike, and a cornerstone for any serious Scottish social history collection.
