From the age of crusades and cathedrals comes a powerful vernacular voice telling England's story from within. The past speaks in verse. Robert of Gloucester's Chronicle, preserved here in Thomas Hearne's landmark middle english text edition, is one of the great medieval english chronicles: a sweeping account of the history of medieval England, from legendary beginnings and Anglo-Saxon forebears through the Anglo Norman England history of conquest, conflict, and the rise of the Plantagenet kings of England. Composed in vigorous Middle English and drawing on traditions shared with Geoffrey of Monmouth history and the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, it stands as both narrative and national memory, a middle ages Britain chronicle that lets modern readers hear how thirteenth century England understood its own past. For students and scholars, this Robert of Gloucester Chronicle edition is a primary source for historians and a reliable medieval studies reference book, revealing how politics, kingship, war, and faith shaped everyday understandings of the past. Curious general readers meet vivid episodes and a markedly different voice from modern histories, while collectors gain a cornerstone of English historical writing, prized by Anglo Saxon Chronicle readers and anyone exploring 13th century england history. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
