From Ulster to the ridges of Appalachia, a restless community helped shape a nation. A people on the move. In The Scotch-Irish in America, historian Henry Jones Ford traces scotch-irish immigration and the rise of Ulster-Scots settlers from the ports of the Atlantic to the backcountry. With a sharp eye for politics, religion, and the hard bargains of colonial America settlement, Ford explains how Presbyterian frontier culture forged local government, militia traditions, and a distinctive voice in the young republic. It remains a landmark in american ethnic history and a trusted american history reference, balancing social portrait with national consequence. Written when the United States re-examined its origins, Ford brings order to scattered records and regional legends, connecting parish, meetinghouse, and cabin to the making of American politics. The prose is direct and story-led, easy to read in stretches or consult as reference for any curious reader. Readers drawn to appalachian frontier history and the wider Irish diaspora in America will find a clear, compelling account; collectors will value a classic work that speaks to scottish-american heritage. For genealogy and family history enthusiasts, it offers context that turns surnames and migrations into lived experience. Presented here as a complete unabridged edition, it is also ideal as a public domain ebook for building a durable personal library. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
