America's history often survives in boxes: letters, diaries, ledgers, fragments of lived experience. Follow the paper trail today. John Clement Fitzpatrick's landmark guide brings order to that vast, scattered record, mapping where personal papers archives can be found across united states libraries and american archival institutions. Part archival reference directory and part library holdings bibliography, it assembles a practical manuscript collections checklist of historical society manuscripts, university special collections, and other repositories whose holdings underpin serious scholarship. For researchers, it functions as a primary source locator and a set of manuscript finding aids in plain sight: names, places, and institutions aligned to help you plan visits, request copies, or refine a line of enquiry. For the curious reader, it offers a revealing portrait of how memory is preserved, and what kinds of voices were valued, saved, and catalogued. Compiled by a leading editor of American documentary history, this work reflects an era when national records were being systematised and made legible to the public, and it remains a foundational tool for historians, librarians, and collectors of reference classics. It also serves as a steady genealogy research tool and historical research handbook, especially when your next clue lies not in print, but in a folder. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
