From Parisian workshops to palace galleries, Roger de Felice maps the moment French furniture became a language of politics and taste. Clarity, proportion, and imperial poise. In French furniture under Louis XVI and the empire, he traces the shift from louis xvi era france to the napoleonic empire furniture that framed a new regime, spotlighting the makers, materials, and finish that define french cabinetmaking traditions. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today, a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Part decorative arts history and part antique furniture guide, it reads as a practical furniture design reference, attentive to structure and silhouette as much as ornament. Expect a sharp eye for european neoclassical style: restrained curves, classical profiles, and recurring neoclassical furniture motifs that appear across chairs, commodes, tables, and beds. De Felice places each form within court and imperial interiors, showing how ceremony, comfort, and propaganda shaped what was made and how it was displayed. For newcomers it offers immediate interior design inspiration; for seasoned buyers it serves as an antiques collectors handbook to identify period character and avoid anachronisms. As a record of french decorative arts at a pivotal turn, it remains an essential companion for anyone who loves antiques, museums, or the craft behind enduring elegance. First published in the early twentieth century, its measured voice still guides connoisseurs, historians, and restorers through authentic forms and respectful attribution today.
