A single Sunday could govern an entire town. In Puritan New England, the Sabbath was law, theatre, and conscience. It is strict, vivid, human. In this public domain classic, Alice Morse Earle traces puritan sabbath observance across colonial era New England, from meetinghouse discipline to hearthside habits, showing how colonial Sunday laws shaped work, play, travel, and speech. Part religious social history, part narrative of everyday practice, her account brings protestant worship practices into sharp relief and reveals the pressures and comforts of a community built around the fourth commandment. Earle writes with the eye of a cultural historian and the ear of a storyteller, drawing on records and remembrance to illuminate seventeenth century Puritans and the early American customs folklore that clustered around the Lord's Day. For readers seeking an american history reference, it offers rich context for the making of New England identity; for church history research, it maps the boundary between devotion and governance with remarkable specificity. As an unabridged historical reprint, it preserves a key voice in the study of daily life in colonies, and classic-literature collectors will value its enduring place in colonial studies and church history. First published in the nineteenth century, Earle helped shape popular understanding of early America; her careful synthesis still informs historians, genealogists, and curious readers. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
