Ausgehend vom Phänomen des Dandytums und seinen prominenten Vertretern arbeiten die Autoren typische Merkmale von Dandys heraus. Sie zeigen den engen Konnex von Dandyismus und narzisstischer Persönlichkeit auf. Dies erfolgt vor dem Hintergrund des Mythos von Narziss und Echo und den Beziehungswünschen beider. Letzteres wurde in der Literatur oft übersehen. Dem Streben nach Bewunderung und Aufmerksamkeit von Narzissten und Dandys stellen die Autoren das dem Menschen immanente Streben nach Ruhm gegenüber. Sodann werden die aktuellen Ergebnisse der empirischen Forschung zur Konkretisierung des schwer fassbaren Narzissmusbegriffs dargestellt. Der für Narzissmus auffindbare Zusammenhang zu Bodybuilding bei Männern und Anorexie bei Frauen weist auf den ursprünglichen Mythos zurück. Praktisch-therapeutische Aspekte zur Behandlung narzisstischer Persönlichkeiten werden erörtert und weisen auf schwierige Behandelbarkeiten. Insgesamt wird deutlich, dass das Dandytum nur eine Ausdrucksform von Narzissmus ist, aber auch dass der ursprüngliche Beziehungsgedanke, wie er bei Narziss und Echo anklang, im modernen Narzissmusbegriff verlorengegangen ist. Es bleibt im therapeutischen Prozess und in der empirischen Forschung zu klären, was Narzissmus meinen soll und was als therapeutischer Auftrag, Zielsetzung und Behandlungsmethode in Frage kommt. Trotz erster optimistisch stimmender konvergenter Entwicklungen bleiben eine Reihe ungeklärter Fragen, auf die die Autoren verweisen.
Starting with the phenomenon of dandyism and its prominent representatives, the authors work out typical characteristics of dandies. They show the close connections between dandyism and narcissistic personality. This is done with reference to the myths of Narcissus and Echo and the relationship desires of both. The latter was often overlooked in psychoanalytic literature. The authors contrast the striving for admiration and attention of narcissists and dandies with the human immanent striving for fame. They present the current results of empirical research that aims to clarify the elusive concept of narcissism. The connection between narcissism and treatment of narcissistic personalities are discussed. All in all, it becomes clear that dandyism is only one expression of narcissism and that the original relational aspect, as it appeared in Narcissus and Echo, has been lost in the modern concept of narcissism. It remains to be clarified in the therapeutic process and in empirical research what narcissism should mean and what can be considered as therapeutic mission, objective, and treatment method. Despite initial convergent developments, a number of unresolved questions remain, to which the authors refer.
