Step into the shadowed halls of seventeenth-century York, where every deposition reveals a life upended by crime, suspicion, or misfortune. Depositions From The Castle Of York, Relating To Offenses Committed In The Northern Counties In The Seventeenth Century, compiled by James Raine, opens a rare window onto the realities of early modern criminal cases, tracing the pulse of justice and human drama in Stuart-era England. Here, each page preserves authentic primary source transcripts-voices of witnesses, accused, and officials-drawn from the castle's historical court records, capturing the raw immediacy of crime and punishment history in the northern counties of England. This archival document collection is more than a chronicle of legal proceedings; it is a living testament to the complexities of English legal history, local customs, and the fates of ordinary people swept into the machinery of justice. Raine's meticulous selections offer an unparalleled resource for academic research reference, genealogy and local history enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the evolution of British criminal justice. The narratives transport readers beyond dry legalese, illuminating the anxieties, hopes, and resilience of those who stood before the court in a turbulent era. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today-a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Whether you are a casual explorer of the past or a classic-literature collector seeking a genuine artefact of seventeenth-century York, this book stands as a cultural treasure-its significance enduring, its stories unforgettable.
