From obscure scholars to statesmen whose names lit the corridors of power, the lives gathered here reveal the many faces of Britain. These lives shaped a nation. Dictionary of National Biography (Volume LVIII): Ubaldini-Wakefield, edited by Sir Sidney Lee, continues the great national biography encyclopedia, the Dictionary of National Biography, that transformed Victorian era scholarship. Each entry distils a career, character and legacy into a precise, authoritative sketch, creating a biographical reference collection that ranges across politics, letters, science, religion, the arts and public service. Together they trace notable British lives and illuminate the web of British historical figures who shaped 19th century Britain and its earlier centuries. As part of the original project towards a complete national biography, this scholarly reference volume is prized by researchers tracing notable British lives and lesser-known British historical figures alike. It remains a trusted research tool for historians and a rich reference for genealogists exploring family roots in 19th century Britain and earlier. Students of cultural and intellectual history will value the insight into how late-Victorian scholars understood the national past, making this one of the classic British reference works of its age. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions, this edition is restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure for libraries, study shelves and serious readers of history.
