Step back through four centuries of New York's evolution, guided not by anecdotes but by the images its citizens left behind. New York begins with maps. In The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909, I. N. Phelps Stokes assembles an extraordinary illustrated history of Manhattan from the earliest European sightings to the dawn of the skyscraper age, drawing on rare maps, plans, panoramic views and documents from public and private collections. This monumental historical atlas of New York functions as both a visual chronicle and a rigorous academic reference on Manhattan. Carefully ordered reproductions trace the urban development of Manhattan street by street and shoreline by shoreline, illuminating early New York history, colonial New York City, and the growth of a modern metropolis. As a resource for New York historians, urbanists, genealogists and curious readers, it presents a uniquely vivid historical map collection and New York City atlas in one. Long recognised as one of the foundational studies of Manhattan cartography and maps, Stokes's work spans 1498 to 1909 Manhattan in meticulous detail and remains an indispensable point of reference for scholarship and collecting alike. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Whether approached as a work of art, a window into old maps of New York, or a cornerstone for serious research, it rewards every level of attention.
