To follow the changing outline of Manhattan is to watch history redraw itself, line by line. Maps remember what cities forget. The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909 (Volume II) gathers a remarkable historical map collection into a single illustrated historical atlas, presenting photo-intaglio reproductions of rare maps, plans, views and documents from public and private archives. Together they chart the growth of New York from a small, precarious settlement into a dense, ambitious metropolis, allowing readers to see early Manhattan history, colonial New York City and the emergence of 19th century Manhattan with their own eyes. Curated and interpreted by I. N. Phelps Stokes, one of the great chroniclers of New York City cartography, this documentary history volume combines visual splendour with deep scholarship. It serves as a trusted reference for historians, a rich resource for genealogists tracing families through streets that have changed their names or vanished altogether, and a rewarding companion for New York history collectors and anyone drawn to Manhattan maps and views. Long recognised as a cornerstone of any serious Manhattan historical reference collection, The Iconography of Manhattan Island stands as both archive and narrative, preserving the layered story of an island that shaped a nation. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
