Step into the heated parlours of mid-19th century America, where argument was art and the Constitution was a cause. Politics meets print with force. The American Whig Review: To Stand By The Constitution (Volume XII), edited by George Hooker Colton, is a historical magazine anthology drawn from a leading 19th century periodical and political literary magazine of the antebellum United States. Whig party politics sits beside literary criticism and cultural reportage, capturing the confidence, anxieties, and rhetorical polish of a nation testing what constitutional government essays should demand of citizens and leaders alike. Its pages weigh national purpose against local interest, and principle against pragmatism, in the idiom of Henry Clay era Whigs and the ideal of Daniel Webster statesmanship. For readers of American political thought, it remains a primary source collection rich in the textures of debate and the mechanics of persuasion. Read as a snapshot of party-building, it charts how editors, writers, and reviewers tried to shape a public conscience in a widening republic, in print, month after month, steadily. More than a window on policy, this volume preserves the sound of educated disagreement at a moment when print helped steer power. It suits American history research, but also the browsing reader and classic-literature collectors who want the period voice without wading through archives. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
