At a moment when the Union felt brittle, The American Whig Review asked readers to stand by the Constitution. Ideas clash, and principles endure. Edited by George Hooker Colton, Volume XIII gathers a complete magazine volume of a leading political literary periodical, where party argument meets the broader life of letters. As a historical political journal of the antebellum United States, it tracks the pressures shaping 1850s American politics: federal power and states' rights, the meaning of constitutional compromise, and the public language of reform and restraint. Expect bracing antebellum policy essays alongside commentary that illuminates whig party politics and the wider national mood. For readers following the Henry Clay Whig tradition, and those attentive to Daniel Webster speeches and the rhetoric of Union, the volume offers a vivid record of how ideals were defended, contested, and sold to the public. Its pages also move through book notices, literary criticism, and cultural reportage, showing how politics and culture were argued on the same stage. Valued today for primary source research, this library reference edition brings historians, students, and curious general readers close to American constitution debates as they unfolded in real time, not as a tidy summary but as an argument in motion. Dip in for a single debate, or read straight through to feel an era thinking aloud on the page. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
