Wind, water, and wild life. In this complete volume ii of A Tour in Sutherlandshire, Charles St. John offers a Victorian travel narrative drawn from his fieldbooks, where weather, tracks, and habits of beasts are noted with a steady eye. Listen to the hills breathe. Sutherlandshire Scotland travel here is intimate and unhurried, written from the ground up. Every entry carries the immediacy of lived days outdoors, where a footpath, a tide line, or a sudden flight becomes evidence. The voice is practical, affectionate, and quietly exacting, too. Part nature writing collection, part sporting record, these pages range across Scottish Highlands wildlife: wary deer on the braes, birds on the shore, and the changing life of burns and lochs. St. John is at his best in clear deer stalking accounts and scenes of salmon and trout fishing, but the true pleasure is his attention to behaviour, season, and place. It reads equally well for natural history readers seeking first-hand observation and for anglers and hunters who appreciate the craft, patience, and ethics of the field. A landmark of nineteenth century Scotland, this is one of the British nature writing classics and a defining strain of Victorian sporting literature, capturing a Highland world on the cusp of modern change. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint -- a collector's item and a cultural treasure, suited to casual armchair travelling and to shelves devoted to enduring, well-made classics.
