Maud will fix it

Bewertet: eBook (ePUB)

The first book by this author and it already has me in its grip. At first, I wasn’t aware that this book was part of a series, as the police get involved rather late. I didn’t know that this is the way Nicci French writes, but I don’t mind a new approach. It keeps the story interesting. Here, Maud O’Connor acts like a problem solver; she has to reopen a case that other investigators thought was solved. This approach naturally doesn’t put her in a good place when she arrives at the East Anglian village. Neither the police nor the residents there are very happy to have a foreigner putting its nose into foreign business. So Maud O’Connor has to fight against a strong resentment; it is a matter of endurance and clever police work that gets the results. I move right on to the second case in this series.

Thoroughly enjoyed it

This was so well written, gripping until the end. If another reader knew whodunnit, good on them, I was left completely left in the dark. A harrowing story of cause and consequence, in this case mainly consequence for trifflingly little cause and how it destroyed lives for so, so long. I particularly liked the character of Maud, the chief investigator who didn't let herself be put off by prejudice and mansplaining.

3/5

Good but not mind-blowing.

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Who doesn't love a mysterious crime that took place 30 years ago? This book was really intriguing but could have been shorter. The disappearance of Charlotte Salter and the death of someone close to her caused many speculations but still both cases were never solved. I usually really like books that dwell in the past and this one started with the night of Charlotte's disappearance, which was interesting but could have done with a faster pace. Despite of that it was still really good. I definitely did not suspect the actual perpetrator and was shocked.
