Sally Rooney is known for her sometimes challenging and introspective writing style, and in this novel I also found myself confused by the two female protagonists. Two women, two love stories, two timelines. While the overall structure of the novel is clear, I occasionally felt lost between the pages. Perhaps that is intentional, as both characters are clearly torn between their ambitions, personalities, and feelings. Still, I wished the novel had been put together in a clearer way. There is no doubt that Rooney belongs in the champions league of writers when it comes to portraying human experiences and emotions that often seem impossible to express. She has a remarkable gift for creating conflicted characters in whom readers can find parts of themselves in. Overall, this may not be her strongest novel. However, the evolving relationship between the two women, as well as their personal growth, makes it a book that can be worth reading.

Two frieds. Two lives. Two viewpoints. Like in her first novel. "Conversations With Friends", it's obvious Rooney was aiming for a (mis)communitcation-issues angle here. However, the plot got lost in the sauce. Rooney is no stranger to creating flawed, accurate depictions of humans in her characters, but with the two female protagonists in this one, she sorta missed the mark a little and both of them came off as rather unlikeable most of the time. Both of them have a very weird way of ineracting with the men they are interested in and there are no real explanations for their behaviour. The friendship aspect of the story, with them writing each other letters and obviously both not being able to understand the others pov was really interesting, and I wish there had been a stronger focus on this part of the plot, rather than the abundant awkward sex scenes.
