As she grows older, she feels a growing darkness inside herself and fears she may one day lose control, just like her father. The man who once read her bedtime stories has become cruel, violent, and lost to drink. At twenty-one, Nizarra enters a deadly tournament, determined to win at all costs. Victory is her only way to escape an arranged marriage to a man she has never met and perhaps her only chance at freedom. Dagen, the beloved king of Zarr, was assassinated by his own infantry general: Mazzar. Dagen did not suffer a normal death. Instead of becoming a ghost, he exists in a twisted state between life and death. His soul now belongs to Nil, the god of death, who turned him into a Deathwalker - cursed to hunt and consume corrupted souls. Ten years later, Nil offers Dagen a very tempting bargain: one hundred years of freedom and a chance to free his kingdom in exchange for a pure soul. That soul belongs to no other than Mazzar’s daughter - Nizarra. The catch? A pure soul cannot be taken by force. It must be given freely. Dagen must earn Nizarra’s trust, persuade her kill to kill her father, and convince her to willingly give him her soul before the deadly tournament ends. If he fails, his own soul will be destroyed. I want to start by saying that I loved everything single minute of this gripping romantasy. The writing is beautiful, and the story’s structure is incredibly clever. We get three perspectives: Nizarra’s POV, Dagen’s POV, and an indirect third POV through the diary of Dagen’s older sister. Her journal entries reveal pieces of the past that seamlessly tie into the present and add extra depth to the story. The worldbuilding and plot unfold slowly and deliberately. The more you read, the more complex the story becomes—yet it never feels overwhelming. The balance is perfect. I was completely immersed from start to finish, and the world felt refreshingly unique. The magic system is very interesting and rather complex, centered around “essence”, and incredibly well thought out. While one aspect vaguely reminded me of Throne of Glass, Vesseless never once felt derivative. I absolutely loved both main characters. Nizarra is tough, intelligent, curious, and deeply compassionate. Reading about the cruelty she endures—especially from a very young age—was heartbreaking. Her mother and sister largely ignore her, while her abusive father tries to mold her into something she will never truly be. No matter what horrors she’s forced to witness or participate in, she refuses to break. Her resilience and quiet defiance made me admire her immensely. Dagen is cut from the same cloth. Bound to a cruel god, he has learned to suppress his emotions—but never loses his humanity. He endures, waiting patiently for a chance to make things right for his people and his kingdom. The slow burn between Nizarra and Dagen is deliciously painful in the best way. While not every question was answered and some elements remained unclear, I was completely satisfied with what we were given. It feels intentional, and I’m almost certain more pieces will fall into place in the sequel. This story is filled with tension, yearning, heartbreak, and high stakes. I found myself on the edge of my seat again and again—and I cannot wait to return to this world. Story: 5 ⭐️ Spice: 2
