Fundamentally

This book was mean, funny, educational, silly, cynical and very unpredictable. I sound like a meaningless blurb but she really did all that with a single story. Nussaibah Younis wrote a book about a lot of tough topics that nobody really wants to deal with, but she did it in such an entertaining way that hopefully a lot of people will pick it up nonetheless. She shows us that between the black and white – the good and the bad – there is a huge grey area, which is very hard to pin down and categorise. It makes us uncomfortable, because our moral compass cannot point us in a clear direction. The characters are flawed and make mistakes. They make you laugh, only to shock you shortly after with an inappropriate remark. The victims are opinionated and the so-called heroes jerks or losers. Now put them together and see what happens. What a brilliant book!
