    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Fun to read

Startup Hell is a lightweight satire about being a young (female) adult in the corporate world, trying to build, maintain, and thrive in a career — mixed with demons, demon hunters, hellhounds, magic, and even succubi and angels. The supernatural aspects of the story made it fun to listen to and kept me entertained. There is no real horror or gore, even though the stakes are high and there is plenty of action and tension. We even get a really cute love story. I especially loved the demon Luke and how he viewed and experienced the human world. All the characters were written well, but unfortunately I didn’t really enjoy the audiobook narrator, as she didn’t use much vocal diversity between the characters, and it was often hard for me to identify who was speaking. Overall, it was a funny, cute, and entertaining read, and I would recommend the book.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Fun romance with demons, capitalism and corporate culture.

She is the daughter of a strong demon hunter family, who lacks any talent in magic and now works in a company in the mundane world. Till her boss summons a demon and dies from a heart attack causing the demon to be stuck in the human world. Only problem: He has no way back, and the demon hunters cannot find out about him, so now Morgan has to help Luke find a way back before things can escalate. Overall, the story is a nice romance without spice but a lot of plot, nice fantasy details, high stakes, a crazy capitalist CEO and a bunch of fun side characters. I'll admit I was immediately caught by the title. It just caught my attention. Also, demons, wizards, magic, romance, and a deal for a soul? A perfect mix for an interesting story. Relatable characters, well-done corporate humour, and well-integrated romance. The story is altogether very well-rounded and a perfect read for in-between if one just wants something light, cute and funny that is also interesting.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Funny Story

The book started off strong but unfortunately lost some momentum along the way. If you’re tired of explicit spice, this might actually be the right book for you, as the romance is mostly implied and remains closed door. Luke was definitely a highlight. I really enjoyed how he learns about humans and their habits. He’s almost too kind and lovable for the demon world, which made him a refreshing change from the overly macho male main characters you often get in this genre. Morgan, on the other hand, was just okay for me. Her struggles at work were very understandable, but the conflict with her mother felt a bit forced. Her mother didn’t come across as uninterested, but rather as someone who doesn’t fully understand the world and is simply trying her best to protect her daughter. I may not have worked for Brad myself, but I still felt like quitting on the spot. He was incredibly unbearable and, unfortunately, far too realistic. Overall, it was a nice read. I don’t regret picking it up, but it didn’t completely blow me away either. The story has a strong focus on workplace struggles, with less emphasis on the romance. The relationship develops more subtly, through small gestures rather than grand declarations of love. That actually fits the theme of the book quite well, especially in the way Luke tends to fulfill small wishes, while the big ones often remain out of reach.
