Dreamers of the Full Moon Coffee Shop

Mai Mochizuki has done it again. “Dreamers of the Full Moon Coffee Shop” is another heartwarming and thought-provoking addition to the series. The writing is gentle and engaging, making it an easy read while still leaving plenty to reflect on. The chapters are short, and the story keeps revealing small hints that made me want to continue reading. What I enjoyed most was the balance between dreams and rationality. Through its characters, the novel suggests that we need both. Dreaming without acting can leave us stuck, while living only through logic can make us lose sight of what truly matters. I thought this was a beautiful message that unfolded naturally throughout the story. I also appreciated how the book explores identity, family, and social expectations with kindness and empathy. One aspect that stood out to me was the introduction of Sala. I liked how the story focused not only on Sala’s identity but also on the different reactions of those around them. One line in particular stayed with me: “Sala is Sala.” It reminded me that our identity doesn’t change simply because the words or names we use do. As in the previous books, the cats are much more than charming companions. They gently guide people without making decisions for them, encouraging them to open their hearts and face emotions they have been avoiding. The idea that stayed with me long after I finished the book was the concept of parallel worlds. I didn’t read it simply as fantasy, but as a comforting metaphor: perhaps every path we don’t take still exists somewhere, and instead of dwelling on regrets, we can accept the life we’ve chosen while remaining open to what lies ahead. If you enjoy quiet, character-driven stories with magical realism, gentle philosophy, and a cozy atmosphere, I highly recommend this book.
