When Briar accepts a staffing position at Temple—the magic school they were denied entry to as a kid—they're hoping to set things right with their estranged best friend who up and left them years ago in pursuit of magical knowledge. After an entire childhood spent fantasizing about the mysteries and adventures that might await them in the world of magicians, they arrive at Temple with ample expectations. Though it quickly turns out that there's a much sinister truth hiding behind those imposing gates that Briar and their allies are faced with. Having read some of Croucher's previous YA work I was very curious to see how they'd pull off this more grown-up and serious vibe. Suffice to say I was thoroughly impressed, definitely one of my top reads of the year! Croucher simply excells at genuine and creative character design. Watching the relationships between all the central characters form and develop was definitely a highlight. I was laughing, crying and sweating all throughout this book. My only complaint is that I need more of this ASAP. I cannot recommend enough.
