ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
An extraordinary novel about friendship and guilt on the violent border between Mexico and the United States.
In a neighborhood of Mexicali, one of the last Mexican cities before the U.S. border, two inseparable girls, Elisa and Aimé, live a summer that will mark them forever. On the night before Elisa leaves the city to study abroad thanks to an athletic scholarship, their shared responsibility in a tragic event will fracture not only their friendship, but the entire neighborhood--a community where violence mixes with superstition and fear.
Two decades later, the two friends meet again, transformed into very different women from the girls they once were. Once a promising athlete, Elisa returns to her hometown alone and ashamed of expectations she has failed to meet. Formerly shy and living in her friend's shadow, Aimé has become an influential woman who has steered her destiny with a firm hand. Between them lies a rift marked by guilt and the different ways of confronting their shared secret.
Donde termina el verano is a novel about the end of innocence and the structural violence that affects children and women in a place of passage scarred by extreme poverty. Written with hypnotic and precise prose, Elma Correa composes a great border elegy in which the official narrative--femicides, stolen children, and mothers who remain silent--is illuminated by the principles of honesty and loyalty of a community living outside the law.
