"The Disaster of Darien" provides a comprehensive historical account of the ill-fated Scottish attempt to establish a colony on the Isthmus of Panama at the close of the 17th century. Francis Russell Hart examines the ambitious Company of Scotland and its vision to create a strategic trade route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Through detailed analysis, the work chronicles the arrival of the settlers in 1698, the establishment of New Caledonia, and the subsequent series of catastrophes-ranging from tropical disease and famine to hostile Spanish opposition and a lack of support from the English crown-that led to the colony's ultimate collapse.
This study delves into the political and economic causes behind the venture's failure, illustrating how the disaster devastated the Scottish economy and influenced the eventual political union between Scotland and England in 1707. By drawing on historical records and correspondence, Hart presents a vivid narrative of colonial ambition and tragedy, making it a vital resource for readers interested in British imperial history, maritime trade, and the historical geography of Central America.
