The Balkans is a place where humour and tragedy coexist in the most unexpected ways - brutal wars and southern hospitality, boundless trust and cunning intrigue.
Milena knows how to translate from Russian and how to stay silent about what matters most. The latter - years of practice, going back to Kosovo in 2004.
A Moscow film director named Lev arrives in Belgrade - charming, confident, and entirely fake. Milena is assigned to his shoot as a translator. She agrees. It is the first of several mistakes.
Lev has his own problem: a man called Vuk is holding his passport and in no hurry to give it back. Make the film - get your documents. Don't - good luck explaining yourself. And so a Moscow adventurer becomes a director against his will, a wealthy Belgrade developer tries to solve his problems using other people's hands, his daughter travels to Saint Petersburg in search of love and comes back with a very different kind of experience, and two young people who are supposed to hate each other find they cannot quite manage it.
Somewhere behind all of this stands a quiet blacksmith with a borrowed name, who knows far more than he lets on. As does Vuk. And perhaps Milena herself - she just hasn't realised it yet.
Out of Shot is a picaresque novella about what happens when the past catches up with you at the worst possible moment. And about how the most real things in life almost always happen out of shot.
