In a quiet corner of the Bronx, sixteen-year-old Nico González survives beneath the weight of silence. His father's fists leave bruises he won't speak of. His mother's hands scrub hotel floors while carrying the weight of generations. And in the cracks of a crumbling apartment, Nico holds tight to one thing that's still his: the memories of Puerto Rico.
Summers on the island were more than vacations; they were freedom. Feeding chickens, roasting pigs with Abuelo Erasmo, and mastering the art of dominoes in dusty plazas. Now, back in Bronx, the game is survival. Until a blue-braided girl named Marie steps into his world and sees through the silence.
As Nico is drawn into a local domino tournament, a scholarship opportunity arises that could reshape his entire future. But leaving means letting go-not just of the Bronx, but of the broken family he still feels bound to protect.
Beneath The Silence: A Riverdale Summer is a raw and intimate coming-of-age story about pain, culture, and the quiet resilience it takes to choose yourself. A powerful debut from Carlos Dávila, it asks what it really means to grow when the world never watered you.
