More than two thousand years ago, Herodotus of Halicarnassus set out to understand how the greatest empire of his age came to war with the fiercely independent cities of Greece. The story begins with Croesus, the fabulously wealthy king of Lydia, and the warning of the Athenian sage Solon: no man can be called happy until his life is complete. From there comes the rise of Cyrus the Great and the Persian Empire, the conquest of Egypt by Cambyses, the strange contest that brings Darius to the throne, the Persian expedition into Scythia, the Ionian Revolt, and finally the great collision between Persia and Greece.

But Herodotus never tells only the story of kings and battles. He pauses to ask how other peoples live. He describes Egyptian religion and medicine, Scythian burial customs, distant lands, extraordinary animals, political arguments, prophecies, rumors, and stories he openly admits he does not believe. He gives competing accounts and allows the reader to decide between them.
That restless curiosity is what made The Histories something new.
Herodotus called his work an historia-an inquiry. From that word comes our word history.
This is not a line-by-line translation. It is an original prose retelling intended for readers who want to experience the narrative architecture, unforgettable characters, great battles, strange inquiries, and distinctive voice of Herodotus without first confronting the enormous length of the complete work.
