From Greenland's emerging literary star, a witty and raw novel about a queer young woman's spiral through colonial trauma and communal despair
Restless, horny, and depressed, the unnamed narrator of Flower Valley is perched on the verge of the rest of her life. Except she's preoccupied with death--whether she's cataloguing suicide statistics of Greenlanders or losing herself in memories of her late grandmother and her best friend, Angutivik, who died by suicide at thirteen.
Escaping Nuuk for college in Copenhagen, she tries to steel her heart against grief and a maddening ache for her girlfriend Maliina. But quickly she finds herself sinking under the weight of exams, the distance from her loved ones, and the flippant ignorance of her Danish classmates. When Maliina loses her cousin to suicide and calls for help, the narrator races back toward the striking fells of East Greenland and Naasuliardarpi, or Flower Valley--an unofficial graveyard for victims of the region's epidemic of hopelessness.
For fans of Jade Sharma and Casey Plett, Niviaq Korneliussen's second novel is at once a mordantly funny character portrait and a wrenching study of a community's struggle to address a mental health crisis and survive in each other's arms.
