Kit is baffled to find herself divorced from Buster, her third ex-husband, and seeks to navigate her semi-chaotic life.
"After Buster divorced me, I have to admit this: my judgement was askew for some time. Has continued to be askew. When it comes to men. It isn't Buster's fault that I've sort of gone off the rails for a while. I mean, I really can't blame Buster. But I kind of do."
Living in Regina, Saskatchewan, in the year 2000, Kit finds herself in the confusing aftermath of her third divorce, and somehow all three of her ex-husbands still circulate in her life, more or less amicably. Her mother won't quit smoking through their Friday movie nights, her sons wander in and out looking for stuff, and her best friend Finkelstein wants help to capture Judas Squirrel somewhere in his eaves. Kit herself is trying to decide whether to quit her customer service job and simultaneously trying not to drink. More than anything, she wants to stop thinking about the infuriating Buster. How did all this failure and not-unfun havoc happen?
After Buster is a bittersweet comic novel about a witty, drifting woman and her family and romantic entanglements. With warmth and irony, Sorensen captures the absurdities of love, loss, and starting over.
