Here is the great cycle of Norse myth, told whole: the making of the world from fire and ice; Allfather Odin on his high seat with his ravens and wolves; Thor and his hammer; the tricks and treason of Loki; Freya of the golden tears, weeping amber into the sea for her lost husband; the Norns at the roots of the world-tree; the Valkyrs bearing the slain to Valhalla - and, at the last, the Twilight of the Gods, when the old world burns and a new earth rises green from the waves. First published in 1909, H. A. Guerber's Myths of the Norsemen remains the most beloved retelling of the Eddas and Sagas in English - clear, stirring, and woven throughout with the very verses of the old scalds, and closing with a chapter comparing the Northern gods to those of Greece and Rome. This Lightbound Library edition sets Guerber's full text - introduction and all twenty-nine chapters - afresh, bound behind an original painting.
