Here is a multi-voiced narrative that will allow you to discover the reality, as well as the actions and thoughts, of young French people who had to, sometimes before the age of five, don the uniform and enter military schools whose equivalents do not exist in the United Kingdom... These "Enfants de troupe"" are now over 70 years old; their memories take us back to the 1960s and 1970s. Some pursued a military career, others avoided it; some felt abandoned by their parents; all are grateful for the education they received.
The title of the book, however, could be misleading: it is not the military institution that is being glorified here - this is not a panegyric - but rather the individual journeys of students educated and trained within a particular system blending discipline and camaraderie. Beyond an apparent mix of memories, moments of life, and various pieces of information, there is above all the unbroken thread of adolescence and friendship, continuing to endure nowadays in these institutions.
