Every January, thousands of tax preparers sit down at a desk they haven't touched since April and hope the muscle memory comes back fast.
It doesn't always.
The Seasonal Tax Preparer Survival Guide is for anyone who does tax work seasonally a few months a year, then something else entirely and has felt that particular kind of rust that comes from stepping away and coming back. Not the textbook rust, where you've forgotten the rules. The practical rust: where's the button, what's the shortcut, why does the software look different, and how do you answer a client question mid-return when the answer isn't quite as sharp as it was in April?
This isn't a code reference or a certification manual. It's the conversation a seasoned preparer has with a newer one over lunch honest about the messy parts, built from real situations, and written to be useful the moment things go sideways.
What's inside:
How to reboot your skills before your first live return not just your login screen
A real walkthrough for getting clients through ID.me and IRS.gov (including the account-recovery snag nobody warns you about)
What to do when a return gets rejected and why the answer is already sitting on your screen
How AI tools can help you draft cleaner client communication, faster including bilingual correspondence
A straight-faced conversation about what to say when you genuinely don't know the answer without undermining the client's confidence in you
A season close-out checklist designed to make next January's restart easier.
Every chapter includes a real story, step-by-step guidance, a pitfall to watch for, and a quick-reference box built to be flipped to mid-return. The back matter adds a one-page cheat sheet, client-ready ID.me and IP-PIN handouts, a glossary, and a preview of the free companion resource pack.
Whether it's your first season or your fifteenth, this is the desk reference that should've been there from the start.
