The boxes are in. The bed is made. And now it is dark, and nothing in this room has a name yet.
Nell has moved, and Nell is not worried. She brought the three things that got her through every night in her old room: a kiss folded into her fist, a little star for the wall, and an invisible thread of gold running to her mother's room. Then she switches the star on, and it lights a wall she has never seen. It finds a crack. It finds a chair. It finds a tall dark shape up near the ceiling. A kiss can hold you, but a kiss cannot light anything. And the thread falls so far down an unfamiliar staircase that she cannot tell if it still reaches. For the first time, the three things are not enough. Her mother does not tell her she is wrong. She says something stranger: this room has not met you yet. So they take the little star like a lantern and walk the room, and they give a name to everything in it. The pipe that knocks behind the wall becomes The Tapper. The loose board by the cupboard becomes The Squeak. The tall dark shape turns out to be Nell's own coat on a hook. The crooked thing at the window is introduced, politely, as Tree. Later, when the house starts knocking in the dark, Nell smiles and says: The Tapper. Right. And there's The Squeak, out late tonight. Not About Moving Day. About the Night After. Most books for a moving child stop at the front door of the new house. This one starts there. The truck has gone, the grown-ups are pleased, and the hardest hour of the whole move is the one nobody photographs: the first night in a room that is not yet yours.A Named Thing Cannot LoomAn unfamiliar room is not frightening because it is dark. It is frightening because it is full of things that have not been accounted for, and a child lying awake is working through that list. Naming closes the list. It is also something a child can do themselves, which is the difference between being comforted and being equipped.A Ritual You Can Use Tomorrow AfternoonThe Note for Grown-Ups at the back explains the naming walk step by step: do it in daylight rather than at bedtime, find the sounds on purpose, and let your child invent the names, however silly. A name your child made up is one they trust. This Book Is for You If- You are moving house, or have just moved, with a child under five- Your good sleeper has stopped sleeping since the boxes arrived

Each book takes one night-time fear and gives the child something they can actually hold on to. This one reads perfectly well on its own. Read beside Goodnight, My Own Bed, it also does something else: the three things from that book are put to the test, and near the end Nell reaches for the golden thread and decides she does not need to pull it. A new house is not the fear. Being somewhere that does not know you yet - that is the fear. This book gives a child a way to fix that themselves. Goodnight, Tapper. Goodnight, Tree.
