Narrative of a Voyage to Senegal in 1816 by Jean Baptiste Henri Savigny and Alexandre Corréard is a powerful firsthand account of the ill-fated French expedition to Senegal and the tragic shipwreck of the frigate Méduse off the coast of West Africa. Written by two survivors of the disaster, the narrative recounts the voyage, the shipwreck, and the devastating struggle for survival that followed. The authors provide a vivid account of the hardships faced by those abandoned at sea and document the events surrounding one of the most infamous maritime disasters of the nineteenth century. Beyond its dramatic survival story, the book offers valuable historical insight into maritime travel, French colonial expeditions, Senegal, and the West African coast during the early nineteenth century. This work remains an important account for readers interested in shipwreck history, African travel, maritime exploration, and historical survival narratives.
