In the fictional South American republic of Costaguana, political upheaval revolves around the immensely valuable San Tomé silver mine. As revolution threatens the port of Sulaco, the trusted longshoreman Nostromo is chosen to help remove a shipment of silver before it can fall into hostile hands. The mission changes everything. Nostromo has built his identity on courage, reliability, and the admiration of others, but the secret surrounding the silver begins to alter his relationship to that reputation. What once seemed like public honor becomes entangled with private ambition, resentment, secrecy, and the growing power of wealth. Conrad expands the novel far beyond a single adventure. Mine owners, politicians, expatriates, workers, journalists, revolutionaries, and foreign investors all become part of a society organized around competing ideas of progress, order, loyalty, and profit. The San Tomé mine is not merely a source of riches; it becomes a political force capable of shaping governments, alliances, and personal destinies. The fictional republic of Costaguana allows Conrad to examine the uneasy relationship between local politics and outside economic influence. Characters speak of stability, development, patriotism, and reform, yet those ideals are repeatedly complicated by material interests. Political movements become inseparable from the money that sustains them, while individuals discover that their principles are more vulnerable than they imagined. At the center stands Nostromo himself. Admired as incorruptible, fearless, and indispensable, he has come to understand himself through the reputation others have created for him. As circumstances change, Conrad asks what happens when a man whose identity depends on public esteem begins to feel that the rewards of loyalty have gone to everyone but himself. Published in 1904, Nostromo is one of Conrad's broadest political novels, combining adventure, psychological drama, and social analysis. Its shifting perspectives reveal a world in which no single character fully understands the forces shaping events, and in which wealth can transform private motives as thoroughly as public institutions. For readers drawn to political fiction, revolution, moral ambiguity, and stories of ambition and betrayal, Nostromo offers a complex study of silver, power, reputation, and the unstable foundations on which both nations and individuals build their identities.
