The Shepherd of Hermas was one of the most widely read writings of the early church. Filled with visions, angels, mysterious women, living stones, and a tower still being built, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the hopes, fears, and spiritual life of Christians nearly two thousand years ago.
This contemplative modern retelling removes the distance of ancient language without removing the strangeness of the original. Hermas sees, wonders, misunderstands, asks questions, receives correction, and slowly learns what his visions require of him. At the heart of his journey is a question that remains surprisingly contemporary: What are we becoming? Hermas invites us to wrestle with repentance, character, generosity, desire, responsibility, and care for those who suffer. Some of his answers may inspire us. Others may unsettle us. We don't have to agree with everything he sees to listen to this ancient Christian voice and allow it to challenge our own assumptions. The tower is still being built.Ein neues Kapitel für Ihre Bücher
