Every Christmas, Charles Dickens returns. His most famous festive story appears on stage, on television, and in film. His characters fill shop windows, Christmas cards and family traditions. Even people who have never read A Christmas Carol know Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and the warning cry of "Bah! Humbug!" But did Dickens really invent Christmas? The Man Who Saved Christmas explores how one short book helped transform the way the modern world understands the festive season. Beginning with the noisy feasts, wassailing, mumming and religious customs of medieval Christmas, it follows the festival through Puritan suppression, industrialisation and the rapid social changes of nineteenth-century Britain. At the centre of the story stands Charles Dickens himself: a celebrated novelist haunted by childhood poverty, driven by financial pressure and determined to awaken public sympathy for the poor. Written in only six weeks, A Christmas Carol became an immediate sensation. Its message of family, generosity, memory and redemption helped give the changing Victorian Christmas a powerful new emotional meaning. This richly illustrated history examines the book's writing and publication, its extraordinary reception, Dickens's dramatic public readings, and the countless stage, film, and television adaptations that followed. It also includes an image of Dickens's original handwritten manuscript and a specially created montage featuring all eight original illustrations from the first edition of A Christmas Carol. Along the way, it separates fact from legend, revealing which Christmas traditions Dickens inherited, which he helped popularise and why the claim that he "saved Christmas" has endured for more than 180 years. Warm, lively, and packed with fascinating detail, The Man Who Saved Christmas tells how Charles Dickens turned a ghost story into one of the most influential Christmas traditions of them all.
