The Light Within is an illustrated collection of 24 poems by New Zealand poet Andrew Martin, exploring darkness, identity, love, loss, resilience, mental health, self-discovery and the strength it takes to keep moving forward.
Written from a deeply personal place, the collection traces a journey through difficult moments, quiet reflection, relationships, grief, hope and renewal. These are poems about what it means to keep going when life changes, to search for meaning when certainty disappears, and to rediscover a sense of self when the path ahead is unclear.
Across four parts-The Life We Carry, The Weight of Darkness, The Fire We Keep, and The Light We Become-the poems move from everyday pressures and personal struggles toward strength, connection and renewed purpose. Pieces such as One Day at a Time, When the Time Is Right, A Proud Man, My Fiery Spirit, What Lies Beneath, Those Who Take and The Light Within explore different sides of the same human experience: vulnerability, endurance, love, frustration, courage and the possibility of change.
The poems are accompanied by illustrations that deepen the emotional atmosphere of the collection and give each section its own visual identity. Together, the words and images create a reflective reading experience designed not simply to be read once, but to be revisited during different stages of life.
The Light Within does not present healing as simple or complete. Instead, it recognizes that progress can be uneven, that grief and hope can exist together, and that strength is often found in continuing forward one day at a time. The collection speaks to readers who have experienced loss, uncertainty, loneliness, change or the need to rebuild, while also celebrating love, creativity, family, connection and the moments that make life meaningful.
The illustrated hardcover edition also includes personal reflections that provide further context around the journey behind the poetry. It concludes with After the Darkness, bringing the collection back to its central idea: even after difficult chapters, another chapter can still be written.
At its heart, The Light Within is about finding something to hold onto when life feels heavy. It is about discovering that resilience does not always look dramatic; sometimes it is simply choosing to continue, to create, to love, to speak, and to take another step.
For readers drawn to heartfelt contemporary poetry, reflective writing and personal journeys of resilience and hope, The Light Within offers an intimate collection rooted in lived experience and shaped by the belief that darkness does not have to define the rest of a life.
Your story does not have to end in the dark.
