"I am a sick man. I am an angry man."An unnamed man turns his back on the world and condemns it. Scathing in his attacks on society and its cult of progress, merciless in his self-examination. The result is a haunting portrait of a profoundly embittered individual whose withdrawal from life is embodied by the gloomy retreat he has chosen for himself. Dostoevsky’s brilliantly composed novella is, in Nietzsche’s words, "a true stroke of psychological genius", and a pioneering work of early modern literature.

- For readers of Kafka, Dazai (No Longer Human), Sartre, Camus or Nietzsche
- »A canny work of literature, not a tract: Dostoevsky may have put his own ideas into the mouth of a brilliant man, but he undermined him as a self-destructive mess at the same time.« The New Yorker
- »Dostoevsky’s influence is so widespread and multi-layered that one cannot separate modern writers from his imprint. Philosophers and writers such as Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus, Chekhov, Heidegger, Kafka, Hemingway and countless others.« Le Monde Diplomatique
- »One of his most famous novels, often regarded as an entry-level text to his work, is ›Notes from Underground‹, a short novel written from the first-person perspective of the ›underground man‹« Iowa State Daily
