Leviathan, Volume 1 of 2, begins Thomas Hobbes's complete four-part work at its original opening and carries it through Parts I and II. The book retains Hobbes's dedication to Francis Godolphin, the Introduction, and Chapters I-XXXI. Volume 2 continues at the source-defined Part III boundary and completes the work. This division is a physical large-print solution, not an abridgement or a claim that Hobbes first published two separate volumes.
Part I asks how people perceive, imagine, speak, reason, desire, and fear. Its account of the condition of people without a common power leads to natural law, covenant, and the meaning of a person. Part II then turns to the institution of a commonwealth, the rights and duties of sovereign power, law, counsel, punishment, and the causes that weaken political order. The sequence moves from a theory of human beings toward an account of a state made by their authorization.
The source's short marginal labels appear as subordinate headings rather than as substitute chapters. Readers can use the printed Contents to return to a particular step in Hobbes's argument, from "Of Sense" and "Of Speech" to the later discussions of civil law and sovereignty. His large hierarchical chart of the branches of knowledge is retained as line-structured text in the interior, with its wording and indentation hierarchy preserved for reading at the same large type size.
This Standard Large Print Edition is a 7-by-10-inch case-laminate hardcover. The body is set in 18-point Atkinson Hyperlegible Next with 27-point line spacing. Ragged-right setting avoids stretched gaps between words, and the text is not divided at line endings. Generous margins leave room for a bound page to be held and read. These are specific print design choices, not a claim of WCAG conformance for a fixed-layout hardcover. The source text is printed in black and white; the selected Project Gutenberg HTML witness has no embedded illustration.
This volume's new Lagniappe compares Hobbes's opening method with the beginning of Humane Nature, a related work first published in 1650. The comparator displayed by English Philosophical Texts Online uses a posthumous 1684 copytext, which the companion identifies explicitly. The essay is original publisher commentary, not a passage borrowed from that later printing and not a replacement for any part of Leviathan.
For library and classroom selection, this ISBN identifies the first Standard hardcover volume of the complete Leviathan. It contains Hobbes's original beginning through Chapter XXXI and is meant to be paired with Volume 2 for Parts III-IV and the Review and Conclusion. The selected reading witness is Project Gutenberg eBook 3207, prepared electronically from a Pelican Classics text based on the 1651 first edition. This book does not claim to be a facsimile or to reproduce the historical Harvard Classics copytext.
The exterior cover reproduces a 1651 frontispiece attributed to Abraham Bosse in collaboration with Hobbes, from a British Library digitization released under CC0. That image is independently sourced for the exterior; it is not an image embedded in the Project Gutenberg reading witness. The source note identifies the electronic transcription and explains why the original linked Contents is replaced by the generated print Contents. The two-volume edition keeps the work's original sequence, including the converted marginal labels and, in Volume 1, the hierarchical science chart.
