The vampire you're thinking of isn't really from here. The things that are from here are much worse.
An Irishman who never set foot in Romania stole a real warlord's name, bolted it onto an invented monster, and sold it back to the country as a gift shop. Meanwhile, the actual Romanian dead went on doing what they'd always done. They get up, come home, and quietly drain the family that loved them most.
And Romanians went on doing what they'd always done. They dig them back up.
In 2004, in a village called Marotinu de Sus, that ended in international headlines and a criminal conviction. The tradition isn't dead. It just occasionally ends up in court.
A Room with a Boo: Romania is part folklore guide, part haunted travelogue, and part survival manual for a country where the border between the living and the dead was never properly drawn. It's written by a former night-shift nurse who knows how death enters a room, and how sometimes it doesn't leave.
Inside, you'll meet:
- The strigoi and moroi, the grief-soured revenants who come back not for strangers but for family, and the garlic, sickles and iron stakes used to send them back.
- The things that were never people: werewolves, the Iele, Muma Pădurii, and the Devil's own school of weather magic.
- Vlad Țepeș, the actual man, plus Poenari (his real fortress), Bran (the wrong castle, still haunted) and Corvin (the one that actually looks like the nightmare).
- Hoia Baciu Forest, Romania's Bermuda Triangle, and what's really going on in there.
- The ghosts of the 20th century in Ceaușescu's palace, the prison at Sighet, and the Holocaust dead nobody put on the map.
- The Merry Cemetery, where painted crosses laugh at you from the grave.
And the practical part, done properly: trains and terrifying roads, seasons and festivals of the dead, accessible travel, țuică and the pomana table. There's also a clear, unsentimental chapter on respecting the Roma and a living culture that isn't a Halloween prop.
For readers of dark tourism, folk horror, and anyone who's ever wanted to stand at Poenari at dusk and understand why the shepherds still count the flock twice.
Come for Dracula. Stay for the things he was never scary enough to be.
