The volume is positioned against the backdrop of a critical juncture in French and Francophone studies. Enrollments are falling. Budgets are plummeting. Not to mention, the skills professors spent years honing in their students, generative AI now produces in seconds. The instinct narrows to two failing postures: defend a curriculum built for a world that no longer exists, or accept decline as the discipline's inevitable cost of progress.
This volume rejects both. Drawing on eighteen chapters by teacher-scholars working across a wide range of institutions, the volume makes a different case: That the crisis facing Francophone Studies is also, read correctly, a map of where the field's agency actually lives. Its contributors document what happens when programs stopped layering quick fixes onto business as usual and converted, deliberately, around a chosen purpose. From departmental leadership and grant strategy, to heritage-speaker recruitment and virtual exchange, to career pathways and creative pedagogy in the age of AI, the volume aims to offer transferable initiatives and success stories.
None of it is a formula. Every chapter is honest about what its evidence can and cannot claim. What emerges instead is more useful: A discipline being rebuilt, one institution at a time, by people who declined to wait for currents to shift. This book will be valuable reading for scholars and key stakeholders in French and Francophone studies, language education, and modern languages.
