How did the records we know take shape? Who was in the room, which songs were revisited, and what became of the takes that never made it onto an album? In Pickin' Time, Rolf W. Rödel follows Johnny Cash's recording life from an acetate made in Munich in 1954, while Cash was serving in the US Air Force, to "Engine 143," recorded at the Cash Cabin Studio in August 2003. Between those two moments lies nearly half a century of music: the spare boom-chicka-boom sound of Sun Records, the Columbia years, the concerts at Folsom and San Quentin, sessions with Bob Dylan, and the late American Recordings with Rick Rubin.
The result of more than eighteen years of research, Pickin' Time documents around 1,400 studio sessions, including demos and overdubs, and some 120 selected live, radio, and television performances. Each entry brings the work of making music into focus: the date and location, the players and producers, the songs attempted, the takes recorded, and the versions that eventually reached listeners. Master numbers and release details connect a performance in the studio to the record in a collection. Unissued recordings and alternate takes appear alongside familiar classics; collaborations with June Carter Cash, the Carter Family, Carl Perkins, and others place Cash's voice among the people who helped shape his sound.
Open the book to a particular song and find the musicians who played it. Follow the changes from one take to another, or trace Cash's shifting sound across decades and labels. A personal opening message from his sister Joanne Cash Yates offers another way into this remarkable career. For listeners, collectors, discographers, and music historians alike, Pickin' Time reveals the work and collaborations behind one of popular music's most distinctive voices.
